These acrylic paintings came off the easel yesterday. They were the first real attempt I have made to paint from life with acrylic, and I must say that I enjoyed every minute.
Today I will be switching back to pastel to finish a sketch of Anna doing this:

What a great model! Hope to show you the result tonight.

Beautiful paintings, Lauren! Very sellable. I admire your discipline and drive in making time to paint, we’re praying that the time you’ve set aside in the studio this summer is successful. Can’t wait to see more!

I was looking at these yesterday and the one on the left was my favorite. Today the one on the right is my favorite. They look really great together.
How do you like working in acrylic? Do you use any medium when you paint acrylic? I haven’t before but I’m thinking of trying some.

Thanks!
Kim, I went through the same change of preference for the left to the right. In fact, at one point I almost quit painting the painting on the right for fear of having one (the left) too superior in quality to the other. When I finished I found myself wishing I could continue working on the first painting, but the set up was gone forever. I like them both, but the values are better in the right painting.
I really enjoy acrylic. I like it better than Max Oils, but I do not think its better than regular oils.

Lauren, these are so special. I’ve always preferred the one on the right even when it was partially finished. I like the shoes from the back – they are so much subtler. I like the entire composition better. It is so much fun seeing what you are coming up with this summer – every work is a surprise.

I feel the same way about acrylic being inferior to regular oils but the turpentine is so toxic with the little ones around. I’m hoping experimenting with acrylic medium will produce a nicer color. I find the acrylic color looks dull after it dries and you have to make things a bit darker because they dry lighter. Do you agree? I actually like the quick drying of acrylic.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing the portrait you are working on.

Congrats.

You and your paintings are lovely. I think I’m in the minority, since I like the painting on the left. I checked it out in Flickr, and even though it lacks the depth of values that are captured in the other composition, I’m still partial to it. (maybe because I am a shoe nut?)
