St. Mary of Egypt.

My time ran out, so all I have is a coloring page with a little text adapted from a post on Fr. Stephen Freeman’s blog.  The life of St. Mary of Egypt is so amazing, and could be done in church school in several ways.  I have an idea for a game and also a craft using magnets, but some of my ideas will just have to wait for next year.  Isn’t it great to go through Lent and to celebrate the resurrection every year.

Click here for the coloring page.

You could have the kids glue sand on the landscape to show that St Mary went to the desert to pray.

Here is a little coloring page of Saint Gregory Palamas: Coloring page.

We are going to color the figure and glitter in the halo.  Then the picture can be glued to a piece of construction paper to make it a bit sturdier.  Add a popsicle stick to make it easy to hold.

So this is what we are eating for dinner:

It is Lent. Orthodox Lent is different from what others do for Lent. The Lenten diet is like becoming vegan. Which works for our grocery budget, but it is very boring. Nursing mothers (me) are encouraged not to participate, but I am trying to go without meat. The boys and I are eating our beans and rice with heaping spoonfuls of sour cream and shredded cheese and some whole milk to wash it down. Tonight we are going to try this eggless and butter-free recipe:

Lenten Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 C margarine or shortening
1/2 C brown sugar
1/2 C granulated sugar
1/4 C plain soymilk (for some reason the SILK brand works best, but any kind is fine)
1 t vanilla
2 1/4 C flour
1/2 t salt
1 t baking soda
12 oz. semi sweet or dark chocolate chips

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. Cream margarine and sugars until light and fluffy. Slowly add soymilk, cream well, then add vanilla. Combine the dry ingredients. Add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, then fold in the chocolate chips.
3. Drop by tablespoons on cookie sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes
